A German bakery in India seems like a conundrum. Shouldn’t you be enjoying gulab jamun or jalebi? Or eating the cuisine of the country you’re in? Sure. But sometimes you tire of it. And Indian sweets are some of the unhealthiest as they’re basically fried sugar in huge pots of oil. Pumpernickel German Bakery and Restaurant in Rishikesh is a refreshing change for those seeking some western comfort food.
Whether it’s chocolate brownies, coconut cookies, peanut butter balls, cinnamon rolls or apple strudel, the bakery section is incredible. I went back everyday for the brownies, which in my opinion, are the winning treat. Meanwhile, choices for lunch or dinner range from croissants and salad to chickpeas with avocado and hummus and all of it is vegetarian with gluten-free / vegan options. You can grab it to go or sit inside with a lemon mint tea or espresso.
Located on Laxman Jhula on the west side of Ganga with a dining area overlooking the sacred river, this spot is popular amongst tourists and foreigners living in town. In the evenings, they host events upstairs such as: movie nights, music or else they advertise other events occuring in town. These are generally spearheaded for English speaking travelers, though everyone is welcome.
So enjoy a slice of chocolate-y goodness, a taste of familiarity for the homesick.
